After a leisurely breakfast in the mountains, today’s walk links two of the region’s great river catchments. The trail undulates gracefully across wide grassy ridges and quiet uplands, with uninterrupted views stretching deep into the surrounding valleys. Your guide tailors the day’s rhythm to your group, allowing frequent scenic pauses and interpretation along the way. Gentle river crossings and open landscapes create an immersive and tranquil walking experience, far removed from crowded hiking routes. In the afternoon you descend into the beautiful Mzimkhulu Valley and settle into Mzimkhulu Hut, perfectly positioned above the river and surrounded by dramatic mountain backdrops.

Day 10

This is widely regarded as one of the most visually striking stages of the journey. The route gradually rises onto elevated slopes and ridgelines, revealing sweeping panoramic views of the southern Drakensberg escarpment and the vast open foothills below. The sense of space and solitude is exceptional, and the day is designed to be immersive rather than rushed, allowing guests to fully appreciate the scale, silence, and changing light of the highlands. The trail gently traverses beneath dramatic rock faces before descending toward the Winterhoek basin. Your evening is spent at Winterhoek Hut, set beneath rugged mountain slopes and offering one of the most scenic overnight locations on the trail.

Day 11

A shorter and more relaxed stage allows for a refined balance between walking and restoration. After a slow breakfast and unhurried departure, the trail crosses gentle ridges before descending into the sheltered and exceptionally peaceful Swiman River valley. This section is characterized by open grasslands, clear flowing streams, and broad mountain basins, creating an ideal setting to slow down and fully absorb the atmosphere of the wilderness. Guests often enjoy extended pauses for photography, birdlife viewing, and quiet reflection. Your final overnight stay is at Swiman Hut, beautifully positioned beside the river and surrounded by wide-open mountain scenery.

Day 12

The final morning follows gentle foothill paths and riverbanks through expansive grassland and softly rolling terrain. The walk is reflective and unhurried, offering time to revisit the highlights of the journey and enjoy the last uninterrupted views back toward the escarpment. As the trail opens into broad valleys framed by distant peaks, your guide leads you toward the southern gateway of the range, where the journey concludes at Bushman’s Nek. A private vehicle and refreshments await, marking a seamless transition from wilderness to comfort and the beginning of your onward luxury arrangements.

Day 13

After completing the iconic Giants Cup Trail, today is dedicated to a gentle and unhurried recovery experience in the heart of the Drakensberg Mountains.
